What to Expect from Reflexology

Treatment guide

What to expect from a reflexology treatment.

A practical guide for first-time clients, adapted from the old IFR page and updated for clearer public information.

Before treatment

A professional reflexologist should begin with an introductory conversation. You may be asked about your general health, relevant conditions, medication, lifestyle, and what you hope to gain from the treatment. You should be given the chance to ask questions before giving consent.

During treatment

For foot reflexology, you will usually remove only your shoes and socks. You may sit in a reclining chair or lie on a treatment couch. The reflexologist may clean or refresh the feet before beginning and will then use specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques across the feet or hands.

Some areas may feel more sensitive than others. Pressure should remain within your comfort level, and you can ask the reflexologist to adjust it at any time.

How long does it take?

A first appointment may take around an hour or a little longer because it includes consultation time. Follow-up appointments are often shorter. The number and frequency of sessions should be discussed with your reflexologist and adapted to your individual needs.

How might I feel afterwards?

Many people feel relaxed after treatment. People respond differently, and your reflexologist should explain possible after-effects in a calm and realistic way. If anything concerns you after a treatment, contact your practitioner or seek medical advice where appropriate.
